A good friend of mine is in Japan at the moment, teaching English as a second language. I asked him to send me a photo and a blog post so I could share, with all of you, a little taste of Japanese fashion. Hope you enjoy this special feature.

Street Style in Japan

After walking around the streets of Nagoya, Japan for about 3 weeks I’ve come to two conclusions. First, the Japanese, by and large, dress tight. I have yet to see some overweight, unkempt individual rocking sweats and k-swiss sneakers, ditto for slacker 401’s, crocs, and anything else that suggests an air of fashion indifference or complete apathy. The second fact I’ve realized is that anything we can do, the Japanese can not so much do better, but they can certainly do crazier.

Fashion over here is an incredibly nuanced subject; there’s about a billion sub-cultures and looks stalking the streets. While you do see the odd sailor moon castoff and confused teenager dressed as an incredibly suggestive schoolgirl, most of the kids in their 20’s know how to dress. Casual here means Yorkville chic, dressy means Prada suits in sizes small enough to make a dude with a build like Mclovin look good. Despite the big label trend, some of the outfits I’ve encountered in my trips around the city have, in more than one case, made me stop cold. Japanese guys mishmash styles in a way that strangely seems to work, at least for them. Punk rock chic is one of the bigger trends I’ve seen, as most dudes tread the line between emo chic (if such a thing exists) and full out Sid Vicious clones crossed with a Tyler Durden/Fight Club vibe for good measure. Girls have their own style which goes by age, the main point however is (over) emphasizing anything that goes with looking young and innocent, hence the micro-mini’s, leg warmers and the various stuffed animals popping out of most girls' bags. That said, not every girl on the street dresses like one of Gwen’s harajuku girls, most dress sharper, and the concept of wearing Ugg boots 24/7 has apparently never caught on here, thankfully.

Another LG Fashion week in Toronto has come and gone. And I'm here to share with you some of the images I got a chance to take while dressing and assisting backstage! I had the pleasure of dressing for some of Canada's top leaders in the fashion design industry, for their upcoming Fall/Winter collections. Fashion week took place from March 28 – April 1. I was on the scene three of those days: March 28, 29 and 31. The following are some candid shots I captured before the gorgeous models hit the catwalk. From what I saw, furs – whether real or faux, are big. Animal prints were dominant in the Joe collection. The Preloved show had thick wool leg warmers on all the models, in various patterns and lengths. In the Dimitri show, the male models wore tailored, form fitting shirts, slacks, vests and blazers; nothing baggy (even socks were tucked into pants). I also saw a lot of thick socks on the female models (leather socks for IZMA) worn with open toe chunky heels.

Designers, in order from left to right: IZMA, Joe Fresh, Dimitri-Chris, Pink Tartan, Preloved.

Several months ago, Father Bob from St. John's Church Albion in Caledon, Ontario was replacing the parish's statue of Mary with a new one. Michael Steele, of The Steele Family Foundation, heard of this and had an idea to give the old statue a new home. The family's foundation funded its restoration and donated Our Lady today to the Sisters at Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity, located on Dunn Ave. in Toronto. The statue was just delivered this week and looks as if it was brand new.

This is definitely a fashion forward step in the "right" direction. We need more edge in this town! The Shops in Uptown are bringing many hot retailers in to KW. Toronto has been keeping me busy, but clearly I must check back more often. Also news to me, is that Cora's Breakfast and Lunch is already opened. Mmmmm.
